The Street Risk Probation Instrument was validated using log linear analysis. Four variables were identified as having the most impact on reconviction: employment history, alcohol abuse, other drug abuse, and prior parole and probation history.
Abstract
The latter two variables produce the highest risk levels. While alcohol did not produce a very high risk in most combinations, that is probably due to the cross-addiction of many offenders, who are reconvicted on drug related charges. If factors other than these four are considered in determining supervision levels, they should be categorized as policy factors rather than risk factors. The report includes a suggested risk assessment form, a matrix showing the likelihood of reconviction for each combination of variables, correlation coefficients for the predictor variables, and a description of the distribution of predictor values among sample subjects. 1 appendix (Author abstract modified)
