This guide offers information about the Internet and how to use it to advance substance abuse prevention efforts.
Abstract
Basically the Internet is a system of computers and networks all over the world that are connected to each other and can communicate using a common language or set of commands. The underlying assumption in creating this guide is that people have varying levels of knowledge about, and experience using, the Internet. The guide includes two opportunities for hands-on skill building. A short basic tutorial discusses how to use a Web browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator. A second tutorial is a self-paced exercise on doing searches using the search engine called Google. The guide includes lists of Web sites with tips to enhance use of the sites and acquaint the user with often-missed features. It also offers: (1) ATOD Prevention Starting Points; (2) Maintaining Technology Needs; (3) Science-Based Prevention; (4) Safe and Drug-Free Schools; (5) Faith-Based Resources; and (6) Netbook.
