A model is presented proposing that privatization of prison industry be restricted to businesses which have moved off-shore to take advantage of lower wages as a means to respond to the objections based on unfair competition.
Abstract
The proposed model was included in an empirical effort to measure the attitudes of middle managers in the Alabama Department of Corrections regarding the privatization of prison industries. Responses were received from 29 of the 57 possible subjects. The results appear to indicate that orientation toward work options, which includes orientation toward the proposed model, was related positively to orientation toward policy, orientation toward rehabilitation, and orientation toward input. Orientation toward the proposed model appeared to be associated with orientation toward other programs and rehabilitation. It can be assumed with caution that correctional mid-managers would provide some support for the development of the proposed program and the development and testing of the model might be feasible from the correctional management perspective. 17 references (Author abstract modified)
