Abstract
This article begins with a description of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), a psychometric instrument that was designed to offer useful assessment information for the purpose of offender treatment planning and decision making in forensic settings. It continues with specific assessment issues with regards to forensic psychological assessment. The specific issues addressed included: (1) response distortion; (2) personality disorders; (3) substance abuse; (4) psychiatric disorders; (5) risk appraisal; and (6) treatment planning. A case example is presented and serves to illustrate how certain results from the PAI can facilitate case formulation and treatment planning. A growing body of literature supports the utility of the PAI instrument in examining distorted responding, psychiatric diagnosis, character pathology, substance abuse, risk assessment, and treatment considerations. However, in the area of forensic application of the PAI, research is still new and its continued growth is encouraged.
