This book is a directory that profiles interest groups, both public and private, whose advocacy activities relate in any way to law enforcement, courts, and corrections policies.
Abstract
For the purposes of this directory "criminal justice interest groups" are broadly defined. The groups included are those that not only lobby government officials but also those which raise public consciousness about criminal justice issues. Groups whose primary focus may not be criminal justice policy but have a tangential interest in criminal justice are also included, as well as interest groups composed of criminal justice professionals. The list of groups included in this directory was obtained through an examination of the 1992 edition of the "Encyclopedia of Associations" under the headings of criminal justice, law enforcement, corrections, and courts. Groups represented in hearings on criminal justice issues held by the U.S. Congress over the past several years are also included, as are groups mentioned in articles and books on criminal justice interest groups. The most helpful source, however, was the computerized data files of LEXIS/NEXIS, which contain national newspaper stories over the past 10 years. Information on the groups and their policy positions was obtained from both independent research and a survey questionnaire mailed to each organization. The profile format for each organization addresses organizational history/development, mission statement/purpose, key policy activity/concerns, and further information/resources.
