RESULTS OF A THREE PART SURVEY CONDUCTED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI'S COLUMBIA CAMPUS TO DETERMINE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF UNREPORTED CRIME.
Abstract
QUESTIONNAIRES WERE DISTRIBUTED TO A RANDOM ONE PERCENT OF 26,099 PERSONS REGISTERED AS FULL TIME GRADUATE OR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, FULL AND PART TIME STAFF, AND FULL AND PART TIME ADMINISTRATORS IN WINTER, 1975. THE QUESTIONNAIRES HAD THREE PARTS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE RESPONDENTS, TO LEARN THE EXTENT OF ON-CAMPUS VICTIMIZATION FOR 11 DIFFERENT CRIMES, AND TO BETTER UNDERSTAND ATTITUDES TOWARD CAMPUS POLICE AND THEIR COMPETENCE. SEVENTY PERCENT OF THE SAMPLE GROUP RESPONDED. OF THESE, OVER ONE-HALF HAD BEEN VICTIMIZED, BUT ONLY SLIGHTLY MORE THAN ONE-FIFTH HAD REPORTED THE INCIDENTS. PROPERTY CRIMES WERE REPORTED MORE OFTEN THAN CRIMES AGAINST PERSON. FACULTY AND STAFF MEMBERS HAD MORE FAVORABLE OPINIONS OF POLICE THAN DID STUDENTS. ADDITIONAL TRAINING FOR THE OFFICERS IN INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS AND EDUCATION FOR THE STUDENTS CONCERNING THE ROLES OF POLICE ARE RECOMMENDED.
