This manual presents a discussion outline and visual aids for a presentation designed to explain the concept, elements, and staff role in the Unit Management program in correctional institutions in Canada.
Abstract
In 1986 the Correctional Service of Canada decided to establish unit management to integrate security and rehabilitation in correctional institutions as well as to increase interactions between staff and inmates, improve career development for correctional staff, delegate authority, and provide for accountability at all levels. Under unit management, an institution is divided into smaller and more manageable units centered on an inmate housing unit. Unit management also emphasizes open communication; teamwork; consistency of correctional practices; and the integration of case management, program, and security functions.
