Uniform Crime Reports U.S. statistics for 1985 cover aggregate and individual Index offenses, clearance rates, arrests, and law enforcement employment.
Abstract
Narrative comments focus on trends for each of the Index offenses (murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson). Charts show the monthly variation from the annual average for each Index offense for 1981-1985. Tables present offense-specific data for each of the Index crimes, with some data covering 1981-85 as well as 1985. Data on the clearance of Index offenses for 1985 encompass the total number of offenses cleared; the percent cleared by region, population group, and geographic division; and clearance by arrest of persons under 18 years old. Arrest statistics for drug abuse offenses are presented, and aggregate arrest data are presented and then broken down by arrestee demographic characteristics and region (city, suburbs, and rural). Arrests are also shown by Index offense and State. The police disposition of juvenile offenders taken into custody is reported. Data on full-time law enforcement employees as of October 31, 1985, present the aggregate number of employees per 1,000 inhabitants by region; geographic division; and population group. Data are broken down by civilians and officers, and percent of male and female are indicated.
