In addition to providing the codebook and variable description list for the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) offenses known and clearances for 1979 and 1983, this report describes data collection procedures, the file structure, the codebook information, and processing information.
Abstract
The files include monthly data on the number of Part I Crime Index offenses reported to police agencies (excluding arson), the number of offenses cleared by arrest (or other exceptional means), and the number of police officers killed and assaulted in 1979 and 1983. The data were initially assembled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation from State and local police agencies participating in the UCR program. The appendix contains instructions for completing UCR Return A, which is a monthly reporting form for offense data. A glossary defines the variables.
