Abstract
THE GUIDE IS PART OF A PROJECT UNDERTAKEN BY THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY (MD.) SCHOOL SYSTEM TO PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING AND PREVENTION OF CHILD MALTREATMENT. EACH OF THE GUIDE'S SIX UNITS IS SELF-CONTAINED AND INCLUDES A STATEMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES, A COURSE OUTLINE, COPIES OF JOURNAL ARTICLES, SUPPLEMENTARY INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS, STUDENT ASSESSMENT TOOLS, A LIST OF RESOURCES, DEFINITIONS OF TERMS, AND OTHER MATERIALS. THE UNITS MAY BE TAUGHT SEPARATELY, EACH IN 5 TO 10 DAYS, OR SEQUENTIALLY AS A COMPLETE COURSE OF STUDY. THE FOLLOWING TOPICS ARE COVERED: (1) CHILD MALTREATMENT AS A SOCIETAL PHENOMENON (MALTREATMENT OF CHILDREN PAST AND PRESENT, EVIDENCE OF AND REASONS FOR CHILD MALTREATMENT), (2) THE NATURE OF CHILD MALTREATMENT (DEFINITION OF THE CARETAKER, DESCRIPTIONS OF ACTS OF PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE AND NEGLECT, SYMPTOMS OF MALTREATMENT IN THE CHILD, CONTRASTS BETWEEN MALTREATMENT AND ACCEPTABLE CHILD-REARING PRACTICES), (3) THE EPISODE OF CHILD MALTREATMENT (CHARACTERISTICS OF ABUSING CARETAKERS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN, ROLE OF THE PASSIVE PARENT, EFFECTS ON SIBLINGS, STRESS AS A TRIGGERING MECHANISM), (4) THE PSYCHODYNAMICS OF CHILD MALTREATMENT (THE CARETAKER'S REACTION TO THE CHILD, THE CHILD'S REACTION TO THE CARETAKER, THE PASSING ON OF ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT WITHIN A FAMILY), (5) THE PROBLEM OF MALTREATMENT (DYSFUNCTIONS IN SOCIETY, FAMILIES, AND INDIVIDUALS THAT CAN RESULT IN CHILD MALTREATMENT, OFFICIAL DEFINITIONS OF ABUSE AND NEGLECT, THE STATUS OF CHILD ABUSE/NEGLECT LAWS, MONTGOMERY COUNTY'S REPORTING PROCESS), AND (6) HELP AND HOPE (RESOURCES AVAILABLE FOR ABUSING PARENTS AND ABUSED CHILDREN, POTENTIAL RESPONSES AT THE SOCIETAL LEVEL). THE CURRICULUM GUIDE ALSO INCLUDES OUTLINES OF INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES FOR THE CURRICULUM'S VARIOUS AUDIENCES, A STATEMENT OF THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM'S POLICY ON ABUSE AND NEGLECT, AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY (INCLUDING PRICE AND ORDERING INFORMATION FOR MATERIALS TO BE USED IN CLASSROOM REFERENCE CENTERS), AND A LIST OF RESOURCES.
