Current knowledge about interpersonal violence in the United States is reviewed in the third volume of a four- volume series; the third volume looks at social influences on violent events and behavior.
Abstract
Particular attention is paid to how risks of violent criminal offending and victimization are influenced by communities, social situations, and individuals; the role of spouses and intimates in violence; differences in violence levels between males and females; and the link between drugs and violent events. The first paper advocates merging a community-level approach to violence prevention with more traditional concerns regarding individual and situational factors. Individual and situational contexts are used to explain both victimization by violence and criminal careers in violent offending. The second paper considers marital violence in the contexts of interpersonal violence and family relations, while the third paper examines gender issues in interpersonal violence. The final paper discusses the role of alcohol, drugs, and aggression in violence. References, notes, and tables
