These 10 short stories by a former correctional official deal with the human side of corrections and are based on actual incidents that took place during his career in juvenile probation, adult parole, juvenile detention, and adult institutions for men and women.
Abstract
In an introduction, the author details the origins of his interest in corrections and summarizes the major developments in his career. The individual stories focus on a female inmate's violent outburst upon being denied her request for transfer to a different residential unit to be with a friend, the experiences of an inmate whose personality was between the extremes of the aggressive predators and the weak individuals who are found in all prisons, and a prison bootlegging enterprise. Other stories describe a group of American Indian inmates, the experiences of a youth after leaving a juvenile training school and parole, and a male administrator's experiences at a woman's prison.
