The United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI) presents its 1978 annual report and resource materials from the 49th and 50th international training courses on the treatment of offenders and dispositional decisions in criminal justice.
Abstract
During 1978, UNAFEI conducted seminar and training programs. There were three regular international courses, a seminar, and two training courses, in which 67 government officials in criminal justice from 20 countries in Asia and other regions participated. Emphasis was placed on participant-centered programs, such as comparative study, group workshops, and seminars, for the purposes of exchanging participants' knowledge and experiences and encouraging their active participation in developing recommendations for improving the criminal justice enterprise in each represented country. Appendixes provide information on the materials used in training sessions and on the participants. The materials from the 49th International Training Course focus on the comparative study, which dealt with offender work programs in the various countries represented. The study discussed work programs in general, prison labor, vocational training, community-based work programs, and job placement. The 50th International Training Course considered decisions on the initiation of penal process and prosecution, sentencing, decisions at correctional stages, and coordination among criminal justice agencies. Diagrams, tables, and footnotes are included in several papers submitted. For individual papers in the series, see NCJ 70912-34.
