This preventive educational curriculum is intended to help local school districts in Orange County, California, curtail violent and criminal activities by youth gangs.
Abstract
The curriculum was developed with the assistance of community-based organizations, school district personnel, teachers, outreach consultants, counselors, and parents. The first lesson is designed to familiarize students with the gang prevention program and to discourage them from joining gangs by providing positive alternatives. The goal of the second lesson is to develop student awareness of the violence involved in gang membership and participation, while the third lesson is designed to increase student awareness of how families are affected by youth membership in gangs. Goals of the remaining five lessons are to heighten student knowledge of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, to identify the negative effects of graffiti, to help students increase their self-esteem and self-confidence, and to develop student awareness of positive alternatives to youth gang membership. Each lesson is accompanied by a list of objectives, supplies, and activities. 3 references
