Abstract
Although originally intended to support mental health programs for individuals diagnosed with mental and substance-use conditions, issues in implementing evidence-based practices cut across broader segments of human services, so this second edition has a broader reach. The first chapter defines evidence-based practices and explains why they should be used. The second chapter considers how the movement toward evidence-based practice fits with concepts of recovery, resilience, and cultural competence. The third chapter explains the terms used to describe various approach to evidence-based practices, followed by a chapter with some examples of evidence-based practices. The fifth chapter examines how a program chooses an evidence-based practice for implementation and what is involved in that implementation. This is followed by a chapter that assists practitioners in changing their practice to an evidence-based approach. The seventh chapter focuses on organizational or structural issues that can influence whether or not the implementation of evidence-based practices is successful. The concluding chapter discusses how progress in implementing evidence-based practices can be sustained. The appendixes contain the following material: general organization index criteria, a Multisystemic therapy site assessment checklist, how to read and understand the scientific literature, a bibliography, and listings of the consultant/advisors for the first edition and biographical sketches of the authors.
