DRUG TREATMENT SERVICES AND PROGRAMS THOUGHT TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH JUVENILES ARE DESCRIBED AND PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH EACH ARE CONSIDERED.
Abstract
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COMPULSORY TREATMENT OF JUVENILE DRUG ABUSERS IN ASSOCIATION WITH CRIMINAL JUSTICE DIVERSION POLICIES IS BRIEFLY DISCUSSED, ALONG WITH ISSUES GENERALLY RELATED TO GETTING JUVENILE DRUG ABUSERS INTO TREATMENT. THE FOLLOWING YOUTH SERVICES FOR DRUG ABUSERS ARE DESCRIBED AS TO METHODS USED AND TYPES OF RESULTS ACHIEVED: EMERGENCY DETOXIFICATION SERVICES, PROFESSIONAL COUNSELING (INDIVIDUAL), GROUP THERAPY, FAMILY THERAPY, PEER COUNSELING, TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION, SUPERVISED WORK EXPERIENCE, VOCATIONAL TRAINING, EDUCATIONAL SERVICES, REFERRAL SERVICES, RUNAWAY HOUSES AND GROUP HOMES, FREE CLINICS, THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITIES, HALFWAY HOUSES, OUTPATIENT CLINICS, SPECIAL SERVICES, SCHOOL PROGRAMS, AND YOUTH CENTERS. THE DISTRIBUTION OF YOUTH DRUG CLIENTS IN TREATMENT SETTINGS IS CONSIDERED THROUGH AN EXAMINATION OF DATA FROM THE CLIENT ORIENTED DATA ACQUISITION PROCESS, WHICH PROVIDES THE MOST EXTENSIVE DATA BASE ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF CLIENTS IN FEDERALLY SUPPORTED DRUG TREATMENT FACILITIES, AND THE NATIONAL YOUTH POLYDRUG STUDY. THERE ARE PROPORTIONATELY MORE WHITE THAN NONWHITE YOUTHS ADMITTED TO HOSPITALS AND PROPORTIONATELY MORE BLACK YOUTH THAN NONBLACK YOUTH TREATED IN DAYCARE CENTERS. THERE ARE PROPORTIONATELY MORE FEMALES IN OUTPATIENT TREATMENT COMPARED TO OTHER TREATMENT PROGRAMS. DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF DRUG-ABUSE CLIENTS IN FIVE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TREATMENT ENVIRONMENTS ARE PRESENTED FROM THE NATIONAL YOUTH POLYDRUG STUDY. YOUTHS' REASONS FOR APPLYING FOR TREATMENT AND TYPICAL PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED BY YOUTH DRUG PROGRAMS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. FINALLY, A DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAM DESIGNED TO SERVE YOUTH MUST PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE AND INTEGRATED SERVICES WHICH HAVE BEEN ADEQUATELY EVALUATED FOR REPLICATION. SUPPORTING TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED. (RCB)
