Abstract
In Phase 1: Crisis Intervention and Therapy Preparation, the therapist sets the tone for the entire treatment program, and must establish a trusting relationship with the client/perpetrator--who, invariably, is already stressed--without conspiring against the family and the court. In Phase 2: Analysis of Abuse Situations, the abuse is reviewed extensively. The perpetrator develops an insight into the cycle of causes that led to abuse, and how to intervene by recognizing high-risk situations. In Phase 3: Sense of Guilt and Taking Responsibility, the client/perpetrator learns to rise above his urges and accept responsibility. The therapist should show respect for the client/perpetrator as he recounts his story; should listen carefully, and build upon any signs of remorse. In Phase 4: Rehabilitation, focus is shifted away from guilt and toward self-compassion, healing, and facing life as an adult. In Phase 5: Responsible Behavior and Family Counseling, the therapist supervises the family as the perpetrator makes known that he understands the full extent of his guilt. The treatment has been administered to 11 perpetrators since 1982. So far, none have recidivated. 8 references
