Initially focusing on issues in the area of Hispanic mental health service delivery, this chapter presents an overview of effective approaches in the treatment of Hispanic drug-abusing youths and their families.
Abstract
In addition to describing One Person Family Therapy, a treatment approach that has been used successfully to bring about changes in a family when only one family member is involved in treatment, the chapter addresses the problem of drug abuse among Hispanic adolescents, reviews the research conducted at the Spanish Family Guidance Center on the delivery of culturally sensitive treatment approaches, outlines basic structural family therapy concepts for use with Hispanic drug abusers and their families, and identifies engagement procedures to be used with resistant adolescents and their families. The task for therapists working with Hispanic drug-abusing adolescents is to integrate effective drug abuse treatment interventions with cultural sensitivity based on knowledge of the value structure of the client family.
