This handbook instructs therapists and other mental health professionals in techniques and strategies for treating incest perpetrators.
Abstract
Using actual cases, this book guides counselors and clinicians step-by-step through the therapeutic process, from the initial interview through the termination of treatment. Providing the most up-to-date research available on incest, the book describes a variety of treatment programs proven effective in treating sexual offenders both in prison and community-based settings. The treatment techniques described are designed to guide clinicians in helping clients explore their thoughts, feelings, and actions, leading to insight into the destructive consequences of their behaviors and the acceptance of full responsibility for what they have done. The book demonstrates how effective treatment can lead to family reunification and social and community reintegration for the incest offender. The concluding chapter suggests how clinicians can prevent professional burnout. Some policy recommendations include the training of professional treatment teams to lead in program development and implementation, public education to garner public support and input for policymaking, professional case advocacy, and pilot programs. 57 references, subject index.
