In exploring the future of criminology, this article examines the potential for incorporating the transpersonal psychology (TP) paradigm into criminological theory and criminal justice practice.
Abstract
TP has evolved as an extension and expansion of humanistic and existential psychological perspectives and aims to integrate Western scientific explanations with the more "spiritual" approaches to the human condition characteristic of Eastern consciousness disciplines. TP calls for expanding our concepts of and approaches to living beyond basic ego-level functioning to encompass an understanding of human action and existence. Central to the belief systems of TP and the Eastern philosophies with which it is aligned is the view that life is a continuous process or journey. Another TP core belief is that there are mental, cultural, physical, and spiritual elements of existence, all of which should be in harmony and balance. At the center of the "circle" of existence is the person, who receives input from and has influence on all aspects of the world while striving to maintain and be part of the natural harmony. When the harmony of the outer world is disturbed, our place in that world is characterized by suffering. The path to restoring harmony and balance in the world is to restore harmony and peace within individuals. This perspective of people and their interactions and behaviors has implications for how crime and criminals are perceived in criminal justice policymaking. 34 references
