This article examines the traits and/or characteristics comprising a good leader in both law enforcement and military organizations.
Abstract
General characteristics of good leaders seem to be universal. They understand that situations will change and that they must remain flexible. Good leaders must have the ability to empower everyone in their organization and to treat others as they want to be treated. They are selfless and develop subordinates' traits of leadership. Lastly, good leaders have solid integrity to trust in their abilities, as well as those of their employees, to take ownership of a situation or problem. In summation, characteristics of a good law enforcement leader are integrity, flexibility, confidence, and empowerment. This article outlines the qualities and characteristics of a successful and effective leader in both law enforcement and the military.
