This article enumerates the benefits of continuing staff education through courses offered by the American Correctional Association’s Professional Development Department.
Abstract
Staff development is a crucial element in the corrections profession; well-trained staff is the key to effective operation of the Nation’s correctional facilities. Continual training is necessary to develop more efficient ways of operating in a correctional environment, especially considering the vast amount of technological change that has transformed the correctional industry. Without continual training, staff will not be able to meet changing work methods and duties. The goal of the American Correctional Association’s Professional Development Department (PD) is to foster the professional development of correctional staff through quality training programs. Training for all levels of staff is offered through the PD and training may be tailored to meet specific staff and facility needs. The benefits of such training are enumerated and include the ability to earn continuing education credits through a partnership with the University of Maryland, which has one of the top criminal justice programs in the Nation.
