This curriculum focuses on training for individuals who work with elder abuse victims, emphasizes the older persons's right to self-determination, and promotes the use of voluntary and least restrictive intervention when possible.
Abstract
The curriculum is comprised of a core curriculum and supplements. The core curriculum is based on key concepts for dealing with elder abuse, with emphasis on elders abused by family members or those in a family-type relationship, and includes definitions, signs and symptoms, and guidelines for intervention. It has four modules: (1) overview of the problems of elder abuse; (2) detection of elder abuse; (3) assessment of elder abuse; and (4) intervention strategies and staircase model. The core curriculum is designed to be used by a wide range of mental health professionals, paraprofessionals, community leaders, and volunteers. Supplements are intended to augment the core curriculum by addressing specific concerns of health care providers, court personnel, and law enforcement officers. Appendixes contain additional information on the staircase model, sample case studies, and handouts.
