This report provides data obtained from the Offender-Based Transaction Statistics (OBTS) program on felony dispositions of adults for 1984.
Abstract
OBTS allows tracking of criminal defendants through the criminal justice system from the point of arrest to final disposition by police, prosecutors, and the courts. Reporting OBTS data in 1984 were 11 States representing about 38 percent of the Nation's population and 37 percent of reported crime. They were: Alaska, California, Delaware, Georgia, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. States determine appropriate classifications for their reported dispositions from nearly 400 crime categories established by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Crime Information Center (NCIC). Findings, based on nearly 532,000 felony arrest dispositions in the reporting States indicate that 84 percent of adults arrested for felony were prosecuted; 62 percent were convicted; 36 percent were sentenced to incarceration; and 13 percent were imprisoned for more than 1 year. 11 data tables.
