This analysis of Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), an extract of peppers used in nonlethal spray weapons by police, concludes that the hazard following acute exposure appears to be limited to the characteristic burning sensation expected of the capsaicinoids and is a biochemical reaction that does not result in lasting tissue damage.
Abstract
The analysis used information from a literature review and data from occupational and other settings. Results revealed that exposure to small amounts of OC, as would be expected under the proposed use by law enforcement personnel, would not result in an obvious, irreversible toxicological outcome. However, OC administered to the whole body can be extremely painful. In addition, the controlled laboratory studies provide little guidance regarding what might happen in a field situation. Of particular concern is the possibility of respiratory irritation and the effects this might have on clinically defined asthmatics.
