SUBSTANTIVE GAPS IN THE STRUCTURAL RESEARCH LITERATURE ARE IDENTIFIED, AND RESEARCH PRACTICES THAT WOULD IMPROVE THE COMPARABILITY AND CERTAINTY OF COMMULATIVE FINDINGS ARE SUGGESTED.
Abstract
SUBSTANTIVE GAPS RELATE TO INDICES OF ANOMIE; STUDIES ON POLITICS, POWER, AND CRIME; APPLICATION OF ECONOMIC RESEARCH TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS FOR PREDICTING CRIME RATES; POSSIBLE SPURIOUSNESS OF CULTURAL AND SUBCULTURAL THEORIES; DETERRENCE; STRUCTURAL STUDIES OF CRIME RATES AMONG FEMALES; CHANGES IN THE ETIOLOGY OF SOCIAL CRIME AND DEVIANCE OVER TIME; AND THE FAILURE OF THE PREDOMINANT CROSS-SECTIONAL STRUCTURAL RESEARCH MODEL OF THE 1950'S AND 1960'S TO CONTROL FOR IMPORTANT ECOLOGICAL VARIABLES. THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH PRACTICES ARE ADVISED: (1) USE OF CRIME RATES SPECIFIC TO AGE, RACE, AND SEX; (2) USE OF CITIES RATHER THAN STATES AS THE UNITS OF STUDY; (3) USE OF SPECIFIC CRIMES RATHER THAN GROUPS OF PERSONS AND PROPERTY CLASSIFICATIONS; AND (4) USE OF TIME SERIES.
