This journal issue features 10 articles that describe examples of how collaborations among stakeholders have provided new and improved services in community corrections in various jurisdictions throughout the country.
Abstract
These articles are preceded by an article that defines "collaboration," traces its roots, and outlines elements of successful collaborations. The next article describes a collaborative effort in one of Iowa's districts that has produced a greater involvement of the community in community corrections based in a restorative justice philosophy. Another article profiles a collaboration in Harris County, TX, that has led to the more efficient and effective supervision of sex offenders in the community; and a third article describes the establishment and achievements of regional boards in Virginia that serve multiple localities in initiating and coordinating community corrections efforts. The description of a New York City collaboration (Operation Neighborhood Shield) recounts the development and operation of a cooperative effort of a community and criminal justice agencies in building a community whose environment and services facilitate the successful rehabilitation of offenders supervised in the community. Other programs described involve a statewide cooperative effort between police and parole agencies; a collaborative team that developed a plan for managing sex offenders in the community; a probation program that involves links between a probation agency and a religious group in providing education and guidance for probationers in how to become better fathers; a countywide working group that is addressing domestic violence; and a collaboration to improve the accessibility of substance abuse treatment mandated for probationers.
