This book discusses all aspects of knowledge, procedures, and techniques for the identification, preservation, analysis and use of tire imprint evidence in criminal and traffic accident investigations.
Abstract
The first five chapters provide fundamental information on tire nomenclature, design, manufacture, function, and how they are sold. The remaining 15 chapters discuss aspects of tire imprint evidence in the context of criminal and traffic-accident investigations. One chapter instructs investigators in procedures related to tire-imprint identification and evidence collection and preservation at the crime scene. Another chapter describes the taking of wheelbase and tire-tread-stance measurements. Other chapters discuss a tire imprint identification system, what can be learned without a suspect's vehicle, and how to test tire impressions. Other topics considered are tire noise treatments, the use of tire tread drawings, and what can be learned when the investigator does have a tire from the suspect's vehicle. Traffic-accident investigation, future trends and considerations, preparation for trial, the use of a consultant, and tire-imprint-identification training are also considered. One chapter takes a case from beginning to end to show how tire imprint evidence is developed and used. Glossary, 28 references, and subject index
