This report presents findings of the February 1995 survey of the time intervals from the date of the indictable offense to the completion of processing in magistrates' courts in England and Wales; the data were gathered during one week in February.
Abstract
Results revealed that the average time interval was 132 days, compared with 129 days in February 1994. An increase in the average first listing to completion time made up the largest part of the change; this stage increased from 62 days in 1994 to 64 days in 1995. The average time from the offense to charge or summons increased from 42 days in 1994 to 43 days in 1995. The average time from charge or summons to the first listing remained unchanged at 25 days. The average number of adjournments in indictable cases increased from 2.4 to 2.6; the average length of adjournments remained at 25 days. The percentage of defendants whose cases were completed on the first listing decreased from 21 percent to 19 percent. Figures, tables, methodological notes, and list of sources of further information
