DESCRIBED IN THIS ARTICLE IS AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM THAT WAS BEGUN IN 1971 ON THE INDUSTRIAL FARM OF THE ORANGE COUNTY (CA) JAIL SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE INTENTION OF THE PROGRAM WAS TO ATTACK THE PROBLEM OF RECIDIVISM BY TEACHING ILLITERATE INMATES TO READ, ON THE THEORY THAT LITERACY WOULD IMPROVE THEIR ABILITIES TO HOLD JOBS AND TO BECOME LEGALLY SELF-SUPPORTING. A VOLUNTEER TEAM OF FOUR OLDER WOMEN TAUGHT BASIC CLASSES OF READING, GRAMMAR, SPELLING, AND ARITHMETIC. WITHOUT FUNDING AND SOPHISTICATED METHODS OF DETERMINING AN INMATE'S EDUCATIONAL DEFICIENCIES, THESE VOLUNTEERS INSTRUCTED INMATES ON LEVELS PARTICULAR TO THEIR NEEDS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)...KAP
