This is an information packet for women in abusive relationships and the people who want to help them.
Abstract
The information can be applied to most communities, but it is especially intended for rural and remote communities. Advice pages are targeted for particular persons--the victim, friends, counselors, health care and social workers, law enforcement personnel. A booklet explains what constitutes abuse, reasons why a woman would stay in an abusive relationship, and common excuses offered by abusers that, even if true, would not justify abuse. One in four Canadian women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime-- 68.5 percent of them by men they know. Some pieces of advice for women who decide to stick with an abusive partner are to maintain awareness and readiness of weapons, getaway vehicles, distress signals, etc.; to save money; to not get pregnant; and to be open with people about the problem. There is also a list of books to consult for more information about the subject, and an order form through which to obtain additional materials.
