This article discusses the use of telemedicine and other technologies in correctional facilities.

Abstract

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) is the third largest consumer of telemedicine in the country and has plans to expand its telemedicine capacities even further, until every correctional facility in the State has the necessary equipment. The benefits of using telemedicine in corrections environments are explored and include greater inmate access to specialists and financial savings for the facility. Not only is telemedicine finding a home in corrections facilities across the country, other technological advancements, such as videoconferencing, are also streamlining facility costs and bringing a greater range of services to inmates. While these technological advancements do not come cheaply, they are invaluable in their ability to improve efficiency within the corrections industry. Contact information is provided to learn more about the technologies mentioned in the article.
