Based on a May 1991 technical review meeting sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, this volume presents nine papers on therapeutic communities as methods of drug treatment, with emphasis on recent program advances and research findings.
Abstract
Individual papers present a general theory and model of the therapeutic community, an analysis of socialization into the therapeutic community culture, and a discussion of client outcomes from therapeutic communities. Additional papers focus on retention in therapeutic communities, issues related to adolescents in therapeutic communities, the role of therapeutic communities in drug treatment for women, and therapeutic communities in prison. An overview notes that what distinguishes the therapeutic community from other treatment approaches is the purposeful use of the community as the primary method for facilitating growth and change in individuals. The therapeutic community represents a high-demand approach that is not suitable for all clients. Like other modalities, the therapeutic community field has developed and changed in many ways.
