THE PAPERS PRESENTED EXPRESS THREE MAIN CONCERNS: HISTORY; THE FOUNDATION OF CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORIES; AND THE IMPROVEMENT OF THEORETICAL APPLICATIONS.
Abstract
IN THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT, A DISCUSSION OF CRIMINOLOGICAL THOUGHT OUTLINES THREE BASIC PERSPECTIVES -- CONSENSUS, PLURALIST, AND CONFLICT -- AND THE THREE SCIENTIFIC PARADIGMS -- POSITIVIST, INTERACTIONIST, AND SOCIALIST -- WHICH EXIST IN THE CONTEMPORARY STUDY OF CRIME. A SECOND DISCUSSION IN THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT TRACES THE ORIGIN OF SCIENTIFIC CRIMINOLOGY. IN THE AREA OF CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORY, PAPERS EXPLORE THE CONTRIBUTION OF BIOCHEMICAL RESEARCH TO CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORY, DISCUSS THE ADEQUACIES AND USES OF COMPARATIVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE INCIDENCE OF CRIME, AND ANALYZE SPECIFIC DATA ABOUT OFFENDERS IN A STUDY OF TWO GENERATIONS OF NATIVE AMERICANS. PAPERS IN THE THIRD AREA OF CONCERN, THAT OF THEORY APPLICATIONS, DISCUSS THE IMPROVEMENT OF THEORETICAL SOPHISTICATION AND EXPLANATORY POWER OF CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORIES BY CONSIDERING THE NEGLECTED DIMENSION OF TIME IN TESTS OF CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORIES AND EXAMINE A DETERRENCE CONTROL THEORY OF CRIME AND THE FEASIBILITY OF EMPIRICAL STUDIES OF WHITE-COLLAR CRIME. EACH PAPER PROVIDES REFERENCES.
