This report provides data and information on the administrative and operational activities of the Tennessee Department of Correction during fiscal year 1996-97.
Abstract
Following the presentation of organizational charts, the mission, vision, and values statements of the Tennessee Department of Correction are presented. The report on the commissioner's staff encompasses employee grievances, internal affairs, legislative liaison, the Office of the General Counsel, and the Public Affairs Office. Information on the activities of the deputy commissioner's staff addresses food service, health services, internal audit and accreditation, mental health services, planning and research, program planning, and the Tennessee Correction Academy. Information is also provided on administrative services and community corrections. The operations of each correctional facility are profiled as well. During fiscal year 1996-97, the Department of Correction completed a reorganization, which involved combining the administrative management of several institutions, the centralization of specific functions, closure of the Tennessee Correctional Work Center, establishment of a teacher-to-student ratio that approximated that in the public school system, and reduction in food service staff. The Department of Correction added 311 beds without construction costs and contracted for the use of 1,506 beds owned by the Hardeman County Correctional Facilities Corporation and operated under contract by Corrections Corporation of America, Inc.
