This booklet describes actions taken by State Farm Fire and Casualty Company to prevent and control arson between 1970 and 1980, such as arson investigation training, lobbying for antiarson legislation, and cooperative programs with other insurers.
Abstract
In 1973, State Farm began training its own claim representatives in seminars on investigative techniques and types of evidence needed in court to sustain a denial of a suspected arson-for-profit claim. A Claim Video Network now links the home and regional offices, and a series of videotape training programs on arson is planned. State Farm is training employees as arson investigation specialists, analyzing data on its own arson losses, and is working through advisory committees to encourage cooperation between the public and private sectors in arson awareness and prevention. Employees from State Farm have conducted seminars for law enforcement and fire service officials throughout the country and increased public awareness of the arson problem through interviews with the media. Other accomplishments include seminars for law enforcement and firefighters assistance to States in obtaining LEAA grants, a library of arson education films, the Insurance Committee for Arson Control, and the Property Insurance Loss Register, a computerized register of property insurance loss claims.
