This article argues that the British probation service should use temporary release workshops to help young offender probationers and probation officers define their expectations for supervision.
Abstract
Temporary release programs aid offenders in rejoining their communities and finding acceptable work after release. The development of temporary release programs requires coordination between the probation and prison services in order to fashion appropriate rehabilitation for young persistent offenders. Barriers between the two services must be overcome so that wasteful and unnecessary dichotomies between custody-based and community-based programs can be resolved. At present, too much emphasis is placed on prison-based custody. Both services must examine their goals and objectives and initiate community-based alternatives to custody for young offenders. 4 references.
