Abstract
The book first presents facts about the use of alcohol and other drugs, the connection between drug use and some types of crime, and the cost of drug-related problems. This first section also reviews some of the risk factors that can lead to drug use and the effects of various drugs on individuals. Section 2 highlights the current involvement of youth in drug-use prevention in communities throughout the Nation. Section 3 provides practical guidance and tips on the start of a drug-prevention project. Topics cover who should be included, how to plan and accomplish goals, how to keep the program running smoothly, how to identify problem areas, and how to deal with success. The section concludes with ideas for programs that work and tips to improve success. Section 4 profiles teen-led drug prevention projects around the Nation and demonstrates the range of efforts possible in any community. The book concludes with a section on where to get additional information.
