THIS AUDIO CASSETTE AND FILM STRIP UNIT DISCUSSES TECHNIQUES OF JAIL SUPERVISION WHEREBY CORRECTIONS PERSONNEL MAY ACHIEVE CONFORMITY AMONG THE PRISONERS.
Abstract
INMATES IN JAILS WILL NOT FOLLOW THE ORDERS OF CORRECTIONS OFFICERS OUT OF FEAR, BUT RATHER BECAUSE IT IS IN THE INMATES' PERSONAL INTEREST TO FOLLOW ORDERS. AN ORDERLY JAIL ENVIRONMENT REQUIRES THE APPLICATION OF SUPERVISORY TECHNIQUES. SUPERVISORY PERSONNEL MUST KNOW THEIR JOB AND MUST BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH OTHER EMPLOYEES. WITH SELF-CONFIDENCE, A SUPERVISOR WILL FULFILL THE REQUIREMENTS OF HIS JOB WITHOUT ABUSING PRISONERS OR GUARDS. ORDERS MUST BE TAILORED TO THE INDIVIDUAL AND MUST BE FOLLOWED BY PRAISE OR REPRIMAND AS REQUIRED. SUPERVISORS MUST BE OBJECTIVE AND NOT PLAY FAVORITES AMONG THE INMATES. PROMISES MADE BY SUPERVISORS MUST BE KEPT, AND ADVICE SHOULD BE GIVEN IN ACCORD WITH EXPECTATIONS AND RULES. HOUSEKEEPING REGULATIONS MUST BE CAREFULLY FOLLOWED, ESPECIALLY IN DINING AREAS, AT SICKCALL, IN VISITING ROOMS, AND OUTSIDE THE JAIL FACILITY. PERSONNEL SHOULD BE AWARE OF REGULATIONS CONCERNING INMATE FURLOUGHS, SUPERVISION OF TRUSTEES, AND MONITORING RECREATION AREAS. NO REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. (TWK).
