THE RATIONALE FOR AND THE METHODOLOGY OF TEACHING MANAGEMENT SCIENCE TECHNIQUES TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE ADMINISTRATORS ARE CONSIDERED.
Abstract
DUE TO FINANCIAL EXIGENCIES, LEGISLATORS AND TAXPAYERS ARE BECOMING RESISTANT TO THE DIVERSION OF LIMITED FISCAL RESOURCES INTO PROGRAMS WHICH ARE INEFFECTIVE AND INEFFICIENT. TO INCREASE PROGRAM EFFECTIVENESS AND EFFICIENCY VARIOUS QUANTITATIVE MANAGEMENT SCIENCE TECHNIQUES CAN BE EMPLOYED (E.G., COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS, LINEAR PROGRAMING, TREND EXTRAPOLATION, AND MATRIXING) BY CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAMS IN MANAGEMENT SCIENCE WORKSHOPS FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE ADMINISTRATORS. THESE WORKSHOPS SHOULD INTRODUCE ADMINISTRATORS TO THE FUNDAMENTALS OF VARIOUS MANAGEMENT SCIENCE TECHNIQUES, PROVIDING ENOUGH INFORMATION SO THAT ADMINISTRATORS WILL KNOW WHEN TO USE A PARTICULAR TECHNIQUE, HOW TO SET UP THE PROBLEM, AND HOW TO INTERPRET THE COMPUTER PRINTOUT FOR EACH TECHNIQUE. THE FINAL WORKSHOP SHOULD REQUIRE PARTICIPANTS TO SOLVE OR ALLEVIATE A PROBLEM PECULIAR TO THEIR AGENCY, USING ONE OR MORE OF THE TECHNIQUES DISCUSSED IN PREVIOUS WORKSHOPS. AFTER COMPLETING THE SERIES OF WORKSHOPS, EACH ADMINISTRATOR SHOULD KNOW WHEN AND HOW TO USE VARIOUS MANAGEMENT SCIENCE TECHNIQUES TO DETERMINE THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO ISOLATE GROSS INEFFICIENCIES AND SOLVE OR ALLEVIATE CERTAIN TYPES OF PROBLEMS.
