This guide for young people defines child abuse and explains how and why children are abused. are abused.
Abstract
Caring ways that adults can treat children are explained, including listening to them, spending time with them, making sure they have enough to eat and have clothes to wear, and holding them when they need comforting. The importance of letting out feelings (such as crying and yelling) when one is hurt is emphasized. The guide explains what can happen when people's negative feelings about themselves are not addressed. These feelings may cause them to hurt themselves or to hurt others. Physical hurts, emotional hurts, and sexual hurts are defined. Steps that children can take to end their abuse are described, including telling someone end their abuse are described, including telling someone who can help, telling the person causing the hurt to stop, and calling the police or children's protective services. Thirty-five illustrations are included.
