This report presents a question-by-question tabulation of an 80-question survey of 2,094 adult and juvenile female inmates conducted nationwide in November and December of 1987.
Abstract
The Female Offender Survey Project was designed to assist the American Correctional Association's Task Force on the Female Offender in its policy deliberations. It examined the backgrounds, attitudes, and program needs of the Nation's estimated 43,000 female inmates as well as the administrative principles and practices of Federal, State, and local government correctional institutions and probation and parole systems responsible for housing and supervising female offenders. The tabulation of the responses encompasses personal demographics, living arrangements, children, home and family life, physical and sexual abuse, the use of alcohol and drugs, education, employment, arrest and sentencing, and attitude about prison programs. Appended survey questionnaire, survey administration instructions, and computation of margin of error.
