This manual is intended for use in the selection, training, and use of tactical teams in Federal, State, county, and city police agencies.
Abstract
The author has more than 26 years of experience in tactical training and operations. He emphasizes that unsuccessful operations are always the result of tactical or technical incompetence and that in any operation, the side that has the best training and preparation usually wins. Thus, training must be available, rigorous, and mandatory for all team members. The text lists nine criteria to use in selecting personnel, describes a recommended selection process, and outlines training requirements and facilities. It also details techniques for entering buildings; the use of cover, concealment, and camouflage; and tactics to use in multistory buildings. Principles and techniques of tactical movement and of communications are also explained. Additional guidelines cover the handling of hostage situations, the nature and role of leadership, and first aid procedures. Extensive diagrams and illustrations, operations checklist, and list of tactical support equipment.
