An introduction describes the study and discusses sampling, the file structure, codebook information, and processing information. The survey produced 5,247 completed interviews. Information was gathered on facility type, availability of health care and health services in the facility, type of health care and health care professionals available, personal and educational background of the inmate respondents, reason for incarceration, sentencing, number of sentences and offenses, and use of alcohol and drug abuse both before and at the time of the offense.
