EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE IS PRESENTED AND COMPARED ON THE VARIOUS ORIENTATIONS OF 11 SUBGROUPS OF PEOPLE CLOSEST TO THE PROBLEMS SURROUNDING JUVENILE DELINQUENCY REGARDING WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TOWARD REDUCING JUVENILE PROBLEMS.
Abstract
STUDY FINDINGS ARE PRESENTED ON THE POLICIES AND PROGRAMS SUPPORTED OR RESISTED BY: POLICE/LAW OFFICERS, CORRECTIONS OFFICERS, EDUCATORS, PUBLIC SCHOOL COUNSELORS, STATE YOUTH SERVICES, PRIVATE YOUTH AGENCIES, COURT PERSONNEL, SOCIAL WORK PERSONNEL, THE GENERAL PUBLIC, ADULT INMATES, AND ADJUDICATED YOUTH. QUESTIONNAIRE RESPONSES FROM A TOTAL OF 579 RESPONDENTS FORM THE BASIS FOR THESE FINDINGS. FIRST, THE RESPONSES TO THE QUESTIONNAIRE ITSELF ARE DISCUSSED. SECONDLY, COMPARISONS BY SUBGROUPS OF RESPONSES TO EACH POLICY ISSUE QUESTION ITEM ARE PRESENTED. NEXT, FINDINGS CONCERNING AN INDEX MEASURING THE EXTENT TO WHICH RESPONDENTS FELT THAT JUVENILE POLICIES SHOULD BE 'TIGHTENED UP' (I.E., A 'GET TOUGHER' PHILOSOPHY) ARE EXAMINED. A 'SMALL SPACE ANALYSIS' PLOT SHOWING PHILOSOPHICAL DIFFERENCE AMONG SUBGROUPS IS THEN PRESENTED. FINALLY, A TABLE SHOWING THE SPECIFIC QUESTION ITEMS OVER WHICH THERE ARE SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SUBGROUPS IS OVERVIEWED. BOTH NARRATIVE AND TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)...ELW
