These guidelines are intended to help Victim Support organizations in the United Kingdom develop effective services for victims of domestic assault by providing services that can include personal support, advice, information about the criminal justice system, and referrals to other agencies.
Abstract
Additional services that Victim Support programs can offer include information on crime prevention and personal safety, specialist help, and practical support such as accompanying victims to attorneys and agencies. The Victim Support organizations do not offer legal advice, deal with the alleged offender, mediate between partners, provide relationship counseling, or provide a 24-hour or emergency services. The guidelines are consistent with the policy of the Victim Support organization and are based on the results of national consultation. Individual sections present the organization's definition of domestic violence; outline the organization's policy on the topic; present a structured planning process; detail issues of service delivery; discuss methods of publicizing victim services; and describe volunteer selection, training, and supervision.
