The Support Services Department of the Northumbria Police Authority in England provides professional support for operational officers and coordinates pre-planning for special events and emergency incidents.
Abstract
During 1988 the division was involved in the coordination of 13 visits to Northumbria from members of the royal family. It also provided scientific support for criminal investigations, training in crime investigation techniques, advice on policing on the public transit system, and improved radio communications for use in various activities. It also operated two support patrols, the Special Patrol Group that assisted the regular police divisions in surveillance and other activities and the Club and Vice Squad that dealt with lotteries, licensing, prostitution, and obscene publications. The Dog Section provided support in the use of police dogs, while the Mounted Section provided support for numerous special events. The marine subdivision and underwater search unit focused on marine-oriented crime and on providing underwater dives in the sea, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and wells. Photographs.
