This technical assistance guide offers suggestions for strengthening youth summer employment opportunities.
Abstract
The need for local year-round coordination to develop youth summer employment opportunities is cited, and key participants, including county administrators; the Private Industry Council; local business, the Private Industry Council; local business, employment, and training administrators; and youth bureaus are listed. The importance of establishing a task force to assume overall responsibility for the campaign and to recruit representatives from diversified areas, including government, local businesses, and community-based organizations, is emphasized. The task force should establish objectives, inventory resources, and identify committee work. The key to program success is identifying and securing sufficient job pledges for participating youth. Job development activities include identifying employment opportunities, soliciting corporate contributions for operations and internships, establishing a job development headquarters, and developing a process for following up on employer contacts and pledges. The need to match the employment opportunity with the appropriate candidate is discussed, and the importance of mounting a sound, factual, and active public relations campaign is emphasized. Suggestions for evaluating the program to ascertain its benefits and problems are provided. Six attachments which may be used in evaluating a local campaign are included: youth statistics, employer evaluation form, employer questionnaire, nonparticipating employer questionnaire, participant questionnaire, and job bank sources. An organizational chart is included.
