Abstract
The discussion notes that suicide is now among the leading causes of death in correctional institutions in the United States, especially in jails and detention centers, where the suicide rate is an estimated nine times greater than in the general population. Different types of correctional institutions require different prevention strategies, because the characteristics of those who commit suicide in lockups, jails, and prisons differ significantly. Attention is required to inmate screening, facility design, organization and staff, counseling for the suicidal inmate, and other areas of suicide prevention. Checklists and 200 references
