This report describes the Substance Abuse Questionnaire (SAQ) and summarizes numerous studies and statistics supporting the reliability and validity of this instrument, which is designed to provide an accurate profile of drug abusers and the risk they represent as the basis for responsible decisionmaking.
Abstract
The SAQ is a brief, easily administered, and computer- scored test designed to assess the abuse of alcohol and other drugs by adults. It includes 153 items and can be completed in 30 minutes. The SAQ contains six empirically based scales: truthfulness, alcohol, drugs, aggressivity, resistance, and stress coping abilities. The SAQ report explains the client's scores on the six objective scales and makes specific treatment recommendations. Another report, the SAQ-Adult Probation, is designed for use in adult probation and parole by assessing both risk and needs. SAQ tests can by given on the computer screen or in a test booklet. SAQ diskettes contain copyrighted software programs and all rights are reserved. Research and development related to the SAQ began in 1980 and supports the validity and reliability of the instrument and its use as the empirical foundation for responsible decisionmaking.
